What’s in your shake? 

Here’s the skinny:

Last year I tried Beachbody coaching for about 6 months and it didn’t quite work out for me.  I was drinking the shakes and doing some programs, but I didn’t put too much effort into it.  I wasn’t seeing much of a change, and my wallet was taking a good beating.  So I quit.  And then I realized that I still needed an easy on-the-go breakfast.  I was hoping for one that tasted as good as Shakeology, but that cost a lot less.

I must have tested over 7 different brands, all ranging in prices under $4 per shake.  I’m lactose intolerant so it makes it even harder to find a good one.  And, let me tell you, try as I might, I couldn’t find a decent comparison.  All ranged from okay to downright terrible, but none were anything I could commit to drinking on a daily basis.

It’s always best to do your own research and take the advice others give as opinionated suggestions – they like what they like for whatever reasons and that’s okay.  That’s what I did for me.  And it turned out that Shakeology still came out on top.  I don’t believe that it’s about name brand, the endorsements, or even the hype surrounding Beachbody.  It’s about the ingredients (over 70 including super foods), how my body feels after I drink it (energetic), and, even more importantly, how my body feels when I don’t (sluggish with mean cravings for sweets and carbs).

When it comes down to it, it’s about the facts.  Shakeology is filled with anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, protein, pre-biotics, digestive enzymes, and fiber.  It gives me energy, reduces cravings, nourishes my body, and gives me the nutrients and vitamins I might not get throughout the day (see the chart from Beachbody below).

Shakeology comes in 5 regular flavors – Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry, Greenberry, Café Latte, and two vegan flavors that are equally as delicious and versatile – Chocolate and Tropical Strawberry.  I favor the Chocolate Vegan.  Sometimes I drink it with avocado and cayenne pepper (don’t knock it till you’ve tried it), sometimes with peanut butter, but mostly with cinnamon, vanilla extract, and honey (a liquid version of a cinnamon bun).  Either way, it’s like a milkshake for breakfast and I love it!

For me, it is both a superfood shake and meal replacement. So taking all of that into account, a $4 breakfast doesn’t seem that bad – especially when I’m used to paying the same amount or more for my favorite Starbucks drinks.  And once the ingredients and nutritional info are listed side by side, it’s a no brainer.  Last night when I was doing my research for this post, I was shocked to find out that I was taking in over 400 empty calories (food/drinks that supply food energy but are devoid of nutrition) each time I drank a Frappuccino.  And here I just wanted to be like the cool kids…
