Green Goodness Breakfast Scramble

20180106_2110491685339006.pngToday I’m wrapping up week one of the 21-Day Sugar Detox. You know, it hasn’t been that bad. I thought I’d miss Dunkin’ on Saturday or my usual chocolate chip pancakes or waffles a la mode on Sunday – but I don’t.

Fueling my body with the good stuff first thing helps keep me full and satisfied throughout the day – when I’d otherwise be snacking.

There aren’t too many “traditional” breakfast foods that I can actually eat during this detox. Oatmeal, Shakeology, and those sweets mentioned above are all out. And let’s be real, eggs can get boring very quickly.

So, today I decided to spice things up with Paleo Powder Seasoning – my go-to all-purpose blend. This recipe calls for TWO cups of veggies and is literally green yumminess on a plate.

Fuel your body and your day with this tasty scramble – 21-Day Sugar Detox & Whole30 complaint!screenshot_20180106-2134301787473139.jpg

Grab ’em and go

What do you grab when you’re in a hurry? If you’re like most people, it’s junk. I can remember walking to the corner store armed with a pocket full of change and a desire to check off everything on my list – Laffy Taffy, Hot Fries, Slim Jims, and Blow Pops. My 10-year-old self was shining in the glory of it. Why? Because it tasted good, was convenient, and the packaging screamed: “EAT ME, NOW!”

Flash forward almost two decades, and I still revel in all things easy and convenient, but I pride myself on making better food choices.

That’s why I love Bricks Bars. The ingredients are clean and sustainable, and the on-the-go packaging suits my busy – at times, hectic – lifestyle.  Great for hiking, biking, traveling. Just throw them in your bag, and you’re good to go.

Bricks organic meal bars are paleo and soy, gluten, and antibiotic free. The company uses grass-fed meats, and sustainably sourced GMO-free veggies, fruit, and seeds. Now, that’s something I can stand behind.

My favorite is the organic beef, uncured bacon, cranberry, and sunflower seed bar. Such a unique combination of flavors that makes your senses go wild with adventure. There’s something about the salty-sweet blend that gets me every time.

Runner up is the organic turkey, sweet potato, cranberry, and pumpkin seed bar reminds me of Thanksgiving. Actually, if I’m honest, it reminds me of Willy Wonka’s factory. Anyone remember the 3-course meal in a stick of chewing gum? I always wondered what that would be like. You get the yummy, savory main course, the side dishes, and pie at the close. What nostalgia attached to this!

Don’t just take my word for it. To taste just how delicious these bars really are, head over to You can get a variety sample 3-pack of Bricks Bars for $8.99 and FREE shipping.

Happy Snacking!

Cookie Heaven

If you love coconut, you have to try Rickaroons, and I mean HAVE TO! They are healthy desserts that your taste buds will crave. I mean, how often can you call a cookie an “energizing snack” that is vegan, gluten free, 100% organic, non-GMO, Paleo, soy free AND totally delicious? Answer: not often.

The Rickaroon Team is run by the father-son partnership of Rick and Grant LeBeau. Would you believe that the idea for these cookies started with love? Intrigued? Read the full story here.

Rickaroons come in several yummy flavors: Mocha, Chocolate Blonde, Mint to Be, Megaroon (with chia seeds and Cacao Nibs), and Rick-Or-Treat (Pumpkin Spice and Chocolate). Other healthy ingredients include coconut (of course!) espresso beans, coconut palm nectar, and almond butter.

Treat yourself (or a friend)

All of the Rickaroons are reasonably priced at $25 a dozen, $26 for a dozen variety pack, and $12 for 4-pack sampler (Rick-Or-Treat not included).

Real Fat, Real Food

When I did my first Whole30 I stayed far away from canola and other vegetable oils. Now I can actually taste when a product – like kettle cooked potato chips – is fried in “the bad stuff.” It’s so prominent that it overtakes the taste of the actual food and makes me a little queasy.

The first thing I noticed about Fatworks Leaf Lard is that it’s mild flavor doesn’t saturate the food, it enhances it. Real fats either taste better or don’t have a taste at all.

This company makes premium fats that fit right in with Paleo lifestyles. All products are made with the highest quality, pasture raised animals and without artificial trans fats or fillers. They were designed for gourmet cooks, bakers, and the like, but (fortunately) are available for all to purchase.

Fatworks’ fats are also completely safe and even recommended for pets – just mix a tablespoon or two right into their food. Some parents have noticed shinier coats on their fur babies.

Leaf Lard

This is the highest grade of all lards and comes from the soft fat around the kidneys of 100% pasture raised pigs. It is perfect for frying, sautéing, and baking – a favorite of bakers (and me!).

Beef & Broccoli sautéed in leaf lard

You can sub leaf lard for butter in baked goods, fry up some pretty yummy hash browns, sauté veggies, add some flavor to your meat, and so much more. Some even like to add a spoonful to their coffee – I haven’t tried it yet, but it’s on my list.

Try all 8 Fats

If you’re unsure which fat to buy or you want to try them all, Fatworks sells 1oz sample jars of their 8 fats for just $3 each. The sample jars would also make great additions to food gift baskets.

It used to be really hard for me to drink water – I just didn’t like the taste (or lack thereof). If you’ve read an earlier post, you know that didn’t turn out very well. Now that I know how important it is, I make sure that I regularly pump myself with fluids. The downside of this is that temperatures of liquids start to change the second they are poured into your cup. In just an hour coffee is stone cold and water is lukewarm.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to reheat my coffee because I got busy doing other things and forgot to drink it. Or how many times I’ve dumped out a cup of water because it just wasn’t cold enough. It’s really, really annoying.

In my search to find good-for-you and sustainable products, I came across a company that created a bottle with the ability to keep liquids cold for 24 hours and hot for 12. Healthy Human was started in late 2015 by Richard Stanton and Natalie Shultz, who wanted to find a way “to make people drink more water.” And what better way than with a reusable bottle that keeps drinks fresh for hours?

Healthy Human’s line of products are all 100% recyclable, Certified Paleo Friendly, BPA free, and made from 18/8 stainless steel.

The Experiment

I’m a skeptic by nature, so of course I had to put my stein water bottle through some rigorous tests of my own.

Bottle of ice water

  • Sat in the hot sun on the seat of the car in 90-degree weather for one hour
  • Kept out on the counter for 14 hours

Bottle of cold water

  • Sat out on the counter without a lid for over 5 hours

Bottle of coffee

  • Kept on the desk for the entire morning

Results: In each scenario, the liquid remained the same temperature from beginning to end. This bottle is unreal.

Why I Like It

  • The Hawaiian pink color is so perfectly me!
  • The 21oz size is, in Goldilocks’ words, “just right” – I fill it three times throughout the day and easily reach my targeted daily ounces.
  • It keeps my water refreshingly cold.
  • Drinks taste pure and fresh – no aftertaste and no “plastic bottle” taste.
  • The bottle isn’t too cold or hot to the touch.
  • No condensation or “sweat,” so no need for a coaster.
  • Bottle is leak proof, which makes transportation super easy.
  • It fits in the tiny cup holder of my Fiat.
  • The cap easily screws on and is one size fits all – you can use it for any size bottle.

This is the perfect anywhere bottle. Take it camping, bike riding, or hiking. Bring it to work or school. Take it to the beach – it will keep your beverages cold even in the hot sun. Treat it like you do your wallet – never leave home without it!

Bottom Line

This is the only water bottle you’ll ever need. But, of course you’ll want one in every style and color – they are so fun and playful. And, if you’re the generous type, you’ll want to buy them for everyone you know. Fill your bottle with water, coffee, smoothies, soup, the possibilities are endless!

Spread the love

If you eat dairy-free, vegan, or paleo, it’s often hard to find good-tasting products that fit your lifestyle. Everywhere you turn there are advertisements for ice cream, pizza, yogurt, chocolate, lattes – you name it. Our world doesn’t cater to those with food allergies or dietary restrictions. Sadly, there is only so much dairy we can tolerate before crashing and burning.

When I find treats that are dairy-free and good-for-you, I have to let everyone know. I almost want to take out a billboard saying “TRY THIS!” But I usually just settle for handing out samples of my favorite things. Enter Lovebean Fudge.

Lovebean’s Sea Salt Caramel Spread is, in a word, enchanting. It’s made with organic ingredients and is vegan, paleo, low glycemic, and gluten and soy free. The first three (of five) ingredients are coconut-based: organic pureed coconut, organic coconut sugar, and organic fresh-pressed coconut milk. At first bite the coconut flavor was very prominent, but as I kept eating, it morphed into a rich, heavenly mixture of sweet vanilla, creamy butterscotch, and the perfect touch of sea salt. This was even better than any dairy-based caramel I’ve tried. I want to put it on everything!

The spread comes in a jar ($12.99) and box of 10 squeeze packs ($17.99). I would recommend the jar for baking and recipes and the squeeze packs for on-the-go anytime fun. You can also purchase a sampler six pack ($12.00) to try three of the flavors before committing to a full jar. FYI, it’s totally okay to eat it straight from the jar with a spoon – I won’t judge!

Lovebean’s spread is a dream come true for us lactose-free peeps! Melt it, mold it, bake it, spread it, or pour it on top of your favorite dairy-free ice cream. The possibilities are endless.

But first, coffee

They say money makes the world go round, but I disagree. Coffee does. Especially a nice smooth cup to start out the day. Maybe, just maybe, if everyone added a little more joy (AKA coffee) to their day, the world would be a better place.

When I think about a good-for-you coffee, I only think of the Caveman Coffee Co. Caveman’s coffee beans are grown without pesticides and are hand-picked in Colombia and then small-batch roasted in Albuquerque, NM. The company creates high-quality products that are sourced from trusted farms and manufacturers, and all products are routinely tested for safety.

Pirate Life

The Caveman team believes in living a Pirate Life, which means “going far beyond average, and striving for the healthiest, most vibrant person you can be.” Being healthy is the combination of fitness and nutrition – first, fuel your body with the good stuff.

My Top Picks

Cold Brew Caveman Kit $44

Have you jumped in on the cold brew coffee craze? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen the Starbucks commercial for their “new” cold brew with house-made vanilla sweet cream – and I don’t even have cable. But seriously, it isn’t all that new. In fact, Caveman started serving up their Cold Brew products in 2014 – before it was mainstream. They sell a Cold Brew Concentrate (above) and a nitrogen Cold Brew in a can.

Cold Brew Concentrate (22 oz) – Best if used anytime! Mix one part Cold Brew with two parts water.

100% MCT Pure Coconut Oil (22 oz) – Promotes increased brain function, weight loss, energy, and more. Add a splash to your coffee or just take a tablespoon in good health.

Cacao Butter (8oz) $15

This both smells and tastes like chocolate, but without the added sugar. What is it, exactly? The fat from the inside of a cacao bean – the good kind of fat. The type you can eat (add it to your coffee to give it a mocha flair) or rub on your skin (it’s a good moisturizer and smells supper yummy).

Want a box of goodness delivered to your door each month? Check out the Black Sails Yacht Club subscription box for the US and Canada. I felt like a 5-year-old on Christmas morning the first time I opened mine! Never run out of coffee, because that would be a tragedy.
